Description
Explore further. Worry less. Reconnect with the outdoors.
Have you ever wished you could head out on a walk without worrying about getting lost — or without relying on your phone to guide the way? Our friendly, small-group navigation course is the perfect place to start. Whether you’re planning new adventures, walking with family, or just craving more confidence outdoors, this course will help you find your way with calm and clarity.
Led by Roger Chandler, Lead Instructor at Launch Point Adventures, this supportive session will teach you how to read a map, use a compass, and begin to trust your own sense of direction again.
🧭 What You’ll Learn
We cover the full Bronze National Navigator Award Scheme (NNAS) syllabus, this is typically taught over two days, in a more enjoyable and accessible way — through a series of beautiful, guided walks. You’ll leave with skills to plan and follow your own routes and a real sense of self-reliance outdoors.
You’ll learn how to:
- Use a range of map types and scales
- Find and describe features using 4- and 6-figure grid references
- Orientate a map using landmarks, paths, or a compass
- Use features like paths and boundaries to stay on track
- Understand contours and match them to hills and valleys
- Follow a set direction using a compass (and understand magnetic variation)
- Use the map to check your direction of travel and confirm your position
- Estimate distances using pacing, timing, and map measurements
- Recognise when you’ve gone wrong and correct your course
- Plan simple routes and choose effective navigation strategies
- Stay safe, respect the countryside, and understand your responsibilities outdoors
We tailor the day to suit the group’s experience, ensuring everyone learns something new without getting lost in the details.
🌿 A Digital Detox in Disguise
In a world of turn-by-turn instructions, we’ve lost the art of truly knowing where we are. This course is about more than navigation — it’s a chance to put your phone away, slow down, and reconnect with the land, your senses, and the joy of knowing how to get from A to B under your own steam.
👣 What to Bring
Just wear comfy shoes and clothing suitable for the weather — we’ll provide the maps and compasses.
👨👩👧👦 Small Groups. Friendly Vibes.
Each course is limited to 6 people, giving you plenty of time for personal support, questions, and space to grow your confidence. Children aged 10+ are welcome with a parent or guardian.
